Yesterday, President Donald Trump suggested Republicans need to be “flexible on Hyde” in the context of ongoing discussions on health care subsidies. The Hyde Amendment has prohibited taxpayer funding of abortion in federal programs for nearly 49 years, often with bipartisan support.
Eagle Forum President Kris Ullman released the following statement:
“There can be no ‘flexibility’ on funding the destruction of innocent human life with taxpayer dollars. For more than four decades, the Republican Party has stood against federal abortion funding. Now is not the time to retreat from even the most basic pro-life principles.”
“Pro-life Americans will not bend to the abortion clinics that coerce and aid in the trafficking of women. We will not bend to the abortionists that are engaging in these horrific procedures, including killing babies born alive, selling baby body parts for profit, and ignoring their oath to ‘do no harm.’ We will not bend to the pharmaceutical industry that is pushing dangerous abortion pills through the mail to let women flush their babies down the toilet while suffering alone and in pain. And we will not bend to pro-abortion Democrats who are willing to shut down the government and hurt working families in order to prop up Big Abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood.” At the very least, Hyde Amendment language must be included in our healthcare bills as the bare minimum.”
“This should be the starting point for any negotiations, not an issue needing consideration. The Senate Republicans made it clear in December that they would not extend any Obamacare subsidies without protecting life. This week, House Republicans will have the opportunity to do the same. We urge every member of Congress to oppose any legislation that allows taxpayer dollars to be used to subsidize abortion. And we urge the President to return to his commitment to permanently codify Hyde protections in federal law.”
Eagle Forum will participate in the March for Life on January 23, 2026, in Washington, D.C. More information on Eagle Forum’s pro-life advocacy can be found here.
Eagle Forum was founded by Phyllis Schlafly, a dynamic and charismatic leader who inspired countless women and men to participate in the process of self-government and public policy-making so that America will continue to be a land of individual liberty, with respect for the nuclear family, public and private virtue, and private enterprise. For nearly fifty years, Eagle Forum’s network of state organizations has led the charge to mobilize the grassroots to defend the founding principles of the United States.
