Hi Lew,
I received this paragraph today in an email from my friend, Arthur, in Scotland. He was in the British Parachute Regiment and took part in the Suez invasion of 1956. Arthur went on to become a policeman, working his way up to Detective Chief Superintendent. His police unit caught the IRA bombers in Glasgow. This was MaGee’s gang, who had bombed the hotel in Brighton, almost killing Margaret Thatcher. Here is the paragraph:
“Its still Armistice Day here and all the wars and expeditions the British took part in are mentioned except the one I was in, Suez. I was shot at and men were killed but it was a political disgrace so it never happened. In the Army if you took part in a campaign, especially when you were there in action, you got a campaign medal. I have one for Cyprus but not one for Suez. The bar to the General Service Medal reads Near East’ They are ashamed of it but men died so how can they forget it ?” Arthur
